Sealing a Basin

Money is tight with the new budget and VAT increase, but home work still needs to go at your home to ensure that it is looking as presentable as possible. There are some things that you can do yourself without having to pay a professional, and sealing around a basin is one of them. This can give a facelift to a bathroom and make it look far more clean and crisp. The sealant is the first thing to go and is far less durable that the tiles, and it is prone to mould, so if you replace it it will lift the look of the room.

To seal around a basin is simple and will be done in a few short steps:

Firstly, use a craft knife to cut away the old sealant from the edges of the sink. Be careful not to do any damage to the tiles, as this will give an uneven finish. Clean the surfaces down with white spirits, and make sure the surface is prepped and ready for the new sealant to go on, as this will make it adhere as best it can.

The worst thing is when it doesn't stick properly, and you have to start again, so make sure you don't skimp any time on the prep and you will avoid this.

Cut the tip of the sealant nozzle to a forty five degree angle and screw onto the bottle. Test it on a piece of paper to make sure that it flows properly when squeezed.

You then need to apply the sealant. Gently press the trigger to distribute a steady amount of the sealant, and drag it along the edge, distributing evenly. You can then smooth the edges off with your finger to make sure the edges are sealed. Once this is done it is recommended that you don't touch it until it is dry.
